Washington does not care at all about the question of the dependence of EU countries on Russian gas, and even less about the fate of Ukraine and its gas transport system. The US is looking for an excuse to cut off the source of income for Moscow by seizing the initiative on the European energy market, told German political analyst Alexander Rahr on the TV channel “Russia 1”.
According to him, the strategic goal of the United States is the destruction of the Russian economy, and this cannot be changed in any way, although Donald Trump has a small chance to influence the situation. However, with all this policy, Washington does not at all consider the interests of European states, but in Germany, France, Italy and Austria, the authorities demonstrate their readiness to defend their position before the United States.
“This is a matter of honor, an opportunity to show the independence of the European Union, which means there is a serious confrontation with America ahead. At the moment, with the support of governments, companies and organizations have been created, the purpose of which is to protect firms falling under US sanctions, and this is starting to work, ”the expert noted.
Of course, in this struggle, Rahr is sure, there will be “unpleasant steps” from each of the sides. However, Washington’s pressure may be ineffective if leading European countries strengthen defense against economic sanctions. Against this background, the resolution of the European Parliament against the Nord Stream II gas pipeline looks absolutely ridiculous and can seriously affect the alignment during the upcoming elections not in favor of the anti-Russian forces.
