Vladimir Putin signed a decree suspending the fulfillment of Russia’s obligations to the INF Treaty (Treaty on the Elimination of Medium and Short Range Missiles). The press service of the Kremlin noted that the document was signed on the basis of the need to take measures in response to a violation of the American side of this treaty.
The decree on the suspension of the fulfillment of the obligations of the Russian Federation under the INF Treaty entered into force on the date of its signing on March 4, 2019.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia is preparing a corresponding notification to be sent to the States Parties to the INF.
Recall that at the beginning of last month, the President of the United States and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the United States was suspending the fulfillment of obligations to the INF Treaty from February 2, followed by an exit from the pact, which will take place six months later.
In response to the actions of the American side, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow had suspended participation in the treaty.
The situation was commented by the associate professor of the Department of Political Science and Sociology of the PRUE. G. V. Plekhanov, military political analyst Alexander Perendzhiev on the TV channel NewsFront TV. According to him, the INF Treaty, in principle, was and remains one of the pivots in building an international nuclear security system.
“Unfortunately, the United States embarked on the path of violating the international nuclear order. By itself, the INF Treaty is not so much in the interests of Russia or the United States, as it is in the interests of the member countries of the European Union. We are talking about the security of these states. If we calculate the risks of destruction of this agreement, then Europe will suffer more, ”the speaker explained, wondering why the European Union does not consider it necessary to react to the US decision and is not trying to save the agreement?
“The EU needs not to intimidate Russia with the“ Chinese threat ”, but to insist on modernizing the pact, attracting France and the UK to sign it, since these are nuclear powers. If Europe would like to keep the INF Treaty, they would act, and not keep silent, ”the political scientist noted.
Summing up, Alexander Perendzhiev noted that the international nuclear order is directly connected with the economic order and in general with the international order.
“Destroying one thing, everything else is destroyed,” the political analyst concluded.
