Less than two weeks before the next fateful vote, Сonservative MPs are trying to determine their plan of action. Theresa May has very little time left even for new cosmetic changes in her own Brexit plan.
Jeffrey Cox, the chief lawyer of the entire cabinet of ministers, will arrive in Brussels next week. He will need to clarify all the issues and try to find a compromise solution.
The center of all negotiations will focus on the issue of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. On the sidelines, many Brexiters are ready to support the May plan at the very last moment if Cox receives at least formal agreements and guarantees from the EU.
It is also worth paying attention to how the coalition partners of the DUP will behave. Their possible support also serves as an important indicator that will show whether May can get the necessary number of votes a second time. Making such a compromise decision will require real concessions on the part of Theresa May. For many, May’s resignation after the local elections in May seems to be the obvious solution.
This will give the opportunity to elect a new party leader in the summer and begin the second part of the negotiations with the EU. This will be a logical move, given that in December 2019, Conservative MPs can again pass a vote of no confidence in their current leader.
