Former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont said that he is “shocked” by the EU’s “passivity” in front of the trial against Catalan separatist leaders, while speaking in Brussels on Monday.
“It is time for the European Union to understand that self-determination plays in its favour, that borders are not eternal,” he added.
Puigdemont made these remarks at a joint press conference with Catalonia’s current leader Quim Torra. The politicians appeared together in front of the press in the Hotel Steigenberger, after the European Parliament cancelled an event where they were due to speak.
“[European Parliament President Antonio] Tajani has turned the European Parliament into a puppet of the Spanish right-wing parties”, Torra told reporters.
