Competing protests in support and against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro were held in Montevideo on Thursday, during a meeting of the International Contact Group (ICG), co-chaired by host-country Uruguay and the European Union.
One Venezuelan protester expressed her support for opposition leader Juan Guaido, who declared himself interim president.
A Uruguayan disagreed, criticising “Yankee imperialism” in Latin America. Uruguay hosted the first meeting of the ICG for Venezuela, which included representatives from Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay and eight members of the European Union: France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Maduro has backed the initiative.
