The “Russian threat,” which has long become a household word in the West, is in fact too exaggerated, but Washington is clearly trying to provoke a new arms race that may not affect Europe in the best way.
This was told by the deputy head of the left-wing faction in the German parliament, Heike Hensel, commenting on the decision of the United States to terminate the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Short-Range Missiles.
She stressed that, contrary to Washington’s accusations, there is no real evidence that the Russian side allegedly violated the INF Treaty. At the same time, the decision of the United States may entail a serious confrontation between the superpowers, the parliamentarian said.
According to her, Europe should be a peaceful and social union, but not a military one. Moreover, it is Berlin that should become a mediator in arms control issues, says Hensel, speaking strongly against the increase in military spending on the state. It is more important to seek peace than to spend money on preparing German roads for NATO armored vehicles, she noted.
Hensel is confident that the arms build-up in principle will not be a guarantee of security for Europe. As for the idea of the French leader Emmanuel Macron to create a single European army, the deputy of the Bundestag advised him to spend money on agriculture.
