Venezuela: Elliott Abrams accused of organizing a coup in 2002

Appointed as responsible for US policy on Venezuela, Elliot Abrams was preparing a coup in Venezuela in 2002 and supported punitive detachments in a number of Latin American countries, said Jill Stein, a prominent figure in the US Green Party, candidate in the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections.

Abrams on Friday was appointed at the State Department responsible for US efforts to “restore democracy in Venezuela.” A few days earlier, the United States recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim President of Venezuela.

The participants in the coup of April 12, 2002 overthrew Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, but after two days, thanks to the help of supporters and loyal military, he regained power.
