Greece: Athens protests against EU, NATO

The demonstrants do not want to rename Macedonia to the Republic of Northern Macedonia. Just today, Greek MPs will vote on this issue.

They have been trying to resolve the dispute for more than a decade. Many Greeks want the name Macedonia to be used only in their country. But the former Yugoslav Republic also claims it. A compromise is very necessary to Skopje, it will open a way to NATO and the EU.

More than 130 people were detained in Athens after riots near the walls of parliament. A group of anarchists threw stones, sticks and flares into special forces. The police responded with tear gas.
