Spain: Thousands of retirees demand increased pensions

Thousands of retirees took to the streets of Bilbao, in northern Spain, to demand better pensions and a dignified retirement on Friday.

It has been a year since demonstrations calling for the government to raise pensions began. Protesters argue that the current 0.25% yearly increase of their pensions falls well behind the rate of inflation. From 2017-2018, consumer prices rose by 1.2%.

Protesters demanded a minimum monthly pension of €1,080 (US$1,228).
