Venezuela Accuses the US of Coup D’etat Attempt Against the Country

Venezuela’s minister of Foreign Affairs, Jorge Arreasa, pointed out that Washington implemented an economic blockade against the Republic, which significantly hampers the production of essentials.

The Venezuelan government, led by President Nicolas Maduro, faces another coup attempt sponsored by the USA. This opinion was expressed on Wednesday by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreasa, speaking at a press conference in the UN headquarters in New York, reports the EFE agency.

“We informed the Secretary General [UN] António Guterres that a coup attempt in Venezuela is being carried out again”, – reported Arreasa.

He accuses the United States of another coup d’etat attempt against the Country, trying to use the provisions of its own Constitution to achieve this goal. Arreasa expressed a protest in connection with “constant interference” of the USA and its allies in affairs of Venezuela.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also specified that the United States is carrying out an “economic blockade” against the Republic, which significantly hampers the production of essential goods within the country or forces Caracas to purchase them at excessive prices.

Arreaza made these statements after U.S. Secretary of state Michael Pompeo on Wednesday said on Twitter that the United States “supports the determination” of the Venezuelan National Assembly (Parliament), where the opposition has the overwhelming majority.

On 15 January, the Venezuelan Parliament not only declared Maduro a usurper of democracy, but also assumed Executive powers, citing the provisions of the country’s Constitution.

On January 10, Maduro, who won the presidential election last year, took office as head of state. At the same time, the United States and a large group of Latin American countries said that they did not recognize his authority, calling for a new vote.

On January 11, the speaker of the Venezuelan parliament, Juan Guaydo, said that the country’s constitution allows him to execute the powers of the president. He referred to Articles 233, 333 and 350 of the Constitution, which state that if the President of the Republic is unable to perform his duties, power shall be transferred to the head of the National Assembly.

As the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov pointed out earlier, statements by the United States that Washington can recognize not Maduro, but Guaydo, as president of Venezuela, cause concern. Lavrov reminded that the position of Russia is to avoid any interference in the internal Affairs of sovereign States.
