Trump cancels trip to World Economic Forum in Davos

President Donald Trump on Thursday cancelled a planned trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, later this month.

He cited border security as the reason only hours after attributing a possible cancellation to the government shutdown.

“Because of the Democrats intransigence on Border Security and the great importance of Safety for our Nation, I am respectfully cancelling my very important trip,” Trump wrote on Twitter Thursday. “My warmest regards and apologies to the @WEF!”

The US was in the midst of a partial government shutdown that will enter its fourth on Saturday if it continues.

Trump said earlier on Thursday that he would “probably” claim national emergency powers for himself to go around Congress and build a long-promised wall along the US-Mexico border.

“If the shutdown continues, I won’t go,” he said previously. “I had planned to go. It has been very successful when I went.”
