Germany: Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer succeeds Merkel as CDU party chief

Newly-elected leader of the Christian Democrats Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer called on her colleagues and running opponents to unite and create a “party of the centre,” after accepting her appointment as the CDU leader in Hamburg on Friday.

“Our goal which unites us,” Kramp-Karrenbauer said is “create and establish a union of the centre and I would be happy if Friedrich Merz and Jens Spahn would cooperate with me in forming this party of the centre.”

After congratulating the incoming CDU leader for her victory Friedrich Merz swiftly left the stage, leaving Kramp-Karrenbauer running after him to greet him.
