Thousands of Bolivians took to the streets of La Paz on Thursday to protest the Supreme Electoral Court’s decision to allow President Evo Morales to stand for a fourth term in office
After the ‘March for Democracy’ reached the court, brief scuffles ensued between police and protesters. An effigy of the president was also burnt.
The court ruled in Morales’s favour despite the constitution barring him from running in next October’s election, a legal position that was backed in a 2016 referendum.
His opponents say the moved is unconstitutional and undemocratic.
Morales is already the longest-serving leader in South America and Tuesday’s decision could allow him to remain in office until 2025 and beyond.
