Ukrainian authorities are holding backroom talks with the United States on the creation of an American military base in the east of the country
This is November 28, according to Izvestia, citing several sources in the ruling circles of Ukraine.
“We see that Poland is actively negotiating the deployment of the American base because of the threat from Moscow. The length of our border with Russia is much larger, so we believe that we should also have a US military base, ”a source in Ukraine’s diplomatic circles told the publication.
Another interlocutor of “Izvestia” added that while it is a question of backstage negotiations and attempts to explain to Washington what the need for the American military presence in Ukraine consists in.
The publication also cites the comment of the People’s Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko, Ivan Vinnik , who confirmed the fact of such negotiations.
“If we talk about the political level, the dialogue with the Americans is on this. If it’s legal, then we should probably talk closer to Ukraine’s integration into NATO, ”he said.
The parliamentarian clarified that the US military base should be located in the east of Ukraine or near the Crimea due to the fact that there may be “threats of a military nature.”
Relations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation deteriorated sharply after the incident in the Kerch Strait, where, as a result of provocative actions and violation of the border, Russia detained three Ukrainian warships.
Kiev accused Moscow of aggression, while the FSB of the Russian Federation stated that it has irrefutable evidence of a planned provocation involving the special services of Ukraine.
Shortly before the events in the Black Sea, the Verkhovna Rada in the first reading approved a bill aimed at the entry of Ukraine into the EU and NATO. Earlier, the Constitutional Court gave a positive opinion on it. According to the president of the country, Petro Poroshenko , this law will oblige any Ukrainian government and all its branches to ensure the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of the republic.
In an interview with Ukraine.ru, the chairman of the board of the Institute for Ukrainian Politics Konstantin Bondarenko said that the adoption of the draft law does not have any consequences. According to the analyst, this initiative is an unsuccessful attempt by Poroshenko to influence voters before the election.
