Ecuador’s National Court in Quito ordered former President Rafael Correa on Wednesday to stand trial for his alleged role in the abduction of a political opponent in 2012.
“We will talk to him (about whether he’ll stay in Belgium or not) and we will make a decision. Because with this fragility (of justice) there is really no future for a trial. But (he might come) if he’s given the guarantee of impartiality, that there’s going to be a respect for the most basic norms of the law, and not such an outrageous and obvious abuse such as the one we witnessed today.”
“This resolution, I think, will help to avoid that the criminal executive orders of Rafael Correa happen ever again. And this will also be a warning for those who would like to follow his footsteps.”
