14 children hurt in China kindergarten knife attack

More than a dozen children have been injured after a woman with a knife launched an attack at a kindergarten in China.

Chinese police reported that 14 children were attacked on Friday morning at the Yudong New Century Kindergarten in the Banan district of Chongqing, a large city in the west of the country.

The attacker was a 39-year-old woman only identified by her surname, Liu, the local police said on China’s version of Twitter, Weibo.

She has since been arrested.

The woman is believed to have been carrying a kitchen knife.

The injured children have been taken to hospital, with some being taken away on hospital beds.

After the woman was taken away, video showed police fending off a crowd of people who appeared to be parents.

The local police said the young students were returning to their classroom at 9.30am (2.30am BST) from morning exercises when they were attacked.

Staff and the school’s security guards struggled to restrain the woman, they added.

“The deputy mayor and the municipal public security bureau chief Deng Huilin quickly rushed to the scene to direct the investigation,” the force said.
