Macedonian Police Arrested A Prominent Opposition Journalist

On 23 October, the Ministry of the Interior of Macedonia filed a lawsuit against opposition journalist Milenko Nedelkovski . As the Cybercrime Unit of the Macedonian Ministry of the Interior reported, the motive for prosecuting the journalist was his Facebook posts, in which he allegedly threatened the security of the Prime Minister of Macedonia Zoran Zayev and distributed xenophobic materials.

Police searched Nedelkovski’s home and seized “items that could help the investigation,” AP Opserver reported. The journalist was detained and taken to the police station for interrogation.

“The police knocked on my door to detain me without any serious reason … The fascists of the regime of Zoran Zayev decided to arrest and kill people at any cost. Let them arrest, Macedonia more and this moment, and all of us together. Death to the fascists, freedom for the people! ”, Wrote Nedelkovski on his Facebook page.

Milenko Nedelkovski is one of the most famous critics of the signing of an agreement with neighboring Greece on the renaming of Macedonia. In particular, he has repeatedly commented on the actions of the Macedonian authorities Nedelkovski for EADaily . So, in a recent interview with our publication, the journalist predicted a low turnout in the referendum on renaming the country, which took place on September 30 in Macedonia. He criticized frequent visits by Western leaders to Skopje in order to influence the opinion of Macedonian voters on the eve of the referendum.

“As for the referendum itself, this is a people’s referendum. It is impossible to imagine the more stupid behavior of a simple citizen than the expectation that someone will come and tell him how to vote. I believe that the visits of all the leaders of NATO’s European countries – Austrian Chancellor Kurtz, German Chancellor Merkel, EU Commissioner Mogherini and NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg – aim to show that the Macedonian people are not far, and do not know what is good for them. They say in this way: “we have done everything for you, but you cannot appreciate it, so we will tell you how to vote”. I believe that the Macedonian people will show their best qualities on September 30 and will not go to a referendum, ”said Milenko Nedelkowski EADaily on October 14.
