After three days of debate in the Macedonian Assembly (Parliament), a pause is announced today, and a vote may take place tomorrow. Deputies argue about the constitutional names in connection with the Prespa Treaty with Greece, which provides for a change in the name of the country.
Local media estimate the pause as the last opportunity for the ruling party and the opposition to come to any agreement that can collect 2/3 votes. The ruling coalition for such a majority lacks nine deputies.
Earlier, the opposition party VMRO-DPMNE demanded to stop the debate and go to the polls.
Recall, on September 30, a referendum was held in Macedonia to change the name of the country to “Northern Macedonia”, but due to low turnout, it could not be declared valid.
The treaty with Greece on the name of Macedonia opens the way for the country to the EU and NATO, as pro-Western Prime Minister Zoran Zayev insists.
