The Greek city of Thessaloniki became the center of illegal migrants from the land border with Turkey. After a large-scale police operation, some of the refugees were dispersed from the town square.
All illegal immigrants were transferred to the “Diavata” camp, where there are no proper conditions and enough places, doctors say. According to the journalistic investigation of the newspaper Katimerini, Ankara simply opened the border with Greece to put pressure on Athens and on the European Union.
Every day, the police in Northern Greece arrest traffickers who transfer migrants from the Turkish border to Thessaloniki. Such a procedure is worth 2000 euros per person.
The Athens Financial Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into possible violations of European funds regarding the migration crisis. The EU Migration Minister dismissed allegations of abuse, but acknowledged that migration pressure from the Turkish border has doubled.
