Salisbury police rule out Novichok after diners taken ill at Prezzo

Police have said there is nothing to suggest the two people who fell ill after visiting the Prezzo restaurant in Salisbury, the location of the Novichok attack on a Russian former spy earlier this year, were exposed to the nerve agent. The pair remain in hospital under observation after they became ill on Sunday evening.

Following the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter in March, emergency services took a “highly precautionary approach” to the situation at Prezzo and declared a major incident.

Protective suits were worn by police and paramedics and officials cordoned off the surrounding roads.

Wiltshire Police said the woman, in her 30s, and the man, in his 40s, were taken to Salisbury District Hospital where they were clinically assessed.

“We can now confirm that there is nothing to suggest that Novichok is the substance. Both people remain in hospital under observation,” the force said in a statement.

“The major incident status has now been stood down.”

However, the restaurant remained cordoned off on Monday as investigators tried to establish whether the two people had been victims of crime.
