USA: Butina denied release pending trial

Alleged Russian foreign agent Maria Butina was denied release from jail pending her trial, as a US District of Columbia Court in Washington DC hearing concluded on Monday.

Butina’s attorney Robert Driscoll was seen attending the hearing, during which the presiding judge allegedly stated that Butina can’t be released due to a high risk of her flying away.

The 29-year-old Russian graduate student entered the US in August 2016 on a student visa. She was arrested on July 15 for conspiring against the US government and failing to register as a foreign agent. Her lawyer denies all charges against her.
