Tsipras: The referendum in Macedonia, if successful, will make Greece the leading force in the Balkans

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras expressed hope for the positive outcome for his country of the referendum in Macedonia and the fact that citizens will vote for the agreement on the new name of the country.

“We have an important treaty, and if it will ratify in a neighboring country, it will make Thessaloniki in the north of Greece the starting point for further development and help Greece become the leading force in the Balkan region,” Tsipras said at a press conference.

According to the Greek Prime Minister, his government will complete its four-year mandate on time, despite disagreements with the coalition partner under the treaty on the name of Macedonia.

“The country needs political stability,” Tsipras stressed.

The referendum in Macedonia is scheduled for September 30. Citizens have to answer whether they agree with the renaming of their country to northern Macedonia, which is stipulated by the agreement with Greece, for the sake of integration into the EU and NATO.
