Military officials from Venezuela — one of whom who has been sanctioned by the U.S. for corruption — have been in talks with Trump administration officials about overthrowing President Nicolás Maduro, the New York Times reports.
Contact was established last fall after it was sought out by a Venezuelan commander, and the U.S. saw the country’s humanitarian crisis worsen. Ultimately the U.S. “did not provide material support, and the plans unraveled,” per the Times, and dozens of the coup plotters have been arrested.
