Merkel in Macedonia to personally supervise the preparation for referendum

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will pay an official visit to Skopje on Saturday, where she will hold a meeting with the Prime Minister of Macedonia Zoran Zayev.

As the official spokesman of the German politician said, Merkel intends to assess the situation on the spot before the referendum on September 30.

On this day, the citizens of Macedonia have to answer whether they agree to accept an agreement with Greece on the name of the country. In case of a positive decision of the population, the country will be called Northern Macedonia.

The dispute with Greece around the name was an obstacle to Macedonia’s entry into NATO. With the coming to power after the protracted political crisis of the pro-Western prime minister Zoran Zayev, Skopje made concessions in order to begin the process of integration.
