Heiko Maas calls for Multilateral Alliance in response to ‘America First’

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called for an ‘Alliance for Multilateralism’ of social democracies in response to ‘America First’ policies during a joint press conference alongside Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland at the Foreign Ministry in Berlin, Monday.

“We have to adapt our policy to the new situation. That’s not against Washington at all, quite the contrary. But we must price the new tone from Washington into our foreign policy action,” Maas stated.

Maas continued, “We therefore need a new, balanced partnership with the US. To regain one’s own room to react flexibly to the new reality,” adding that “we as Europeans must take on more responsibility for our own safety and security.”
