Common EU asylum system now “harder” to reach

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said he was discouraged that European leaders fell short of an overall agreement on Friday to revise the EU’s asylum rules.

Leaders from the 28 EU nations met in Brussels on Thursday to hash out a deal on migration.

The talks lasted through the night until the bloc agreed that migrants rescued at sea would be sent to “controlled centres” for processing in the EU. All the measures in the deal are voluntary and it’s unclear just how these centers will work.

Sweden has been pushing for the EU to overhaul its policy for years.

The prime minister’s assistant Hans Dahlgren says to Swedish Radio that the common asylum system Sweden and Germany want will now be harder to reach, but they will keep pushing for it.
