Trump demands shorter deadlines for NATO spending

US President Donald Trump has forcibly restated his position on wanting NATO members to reach 2% spending to a short deadline says source.

However, Trump did not threaten to pull US out of NATO, the source adds.

In 2014, all NATO member states agreed to spend at least 2 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP)on their militaries. But while countries like the UK and the US paid more than they were obliged to, others, such as Belgium and Spain, are still below 1 percent.

Earlier, during meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Donald Trump criticized Germany’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline deal with Russia, calling Berlin a “captive of Russia.”
