Day 1 of annual Brussels NATO summit

Heads of state and government of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries are meeting for the organisations’s annual summit in Brussels on Wednesday, July 11.

Chaired by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the summit is set to discuss the most urgent issues for its 29-members on international security and military affairs.

Set to top the agenda are transatlantic trade agreements as well as the US pull-out from both the global climate pact and Iran nuclear deal. Also set to be discussed is US President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of some of the NATO alliance partners for not spending the agreed-upon two percent of their country’s GDP on defence.

After Brussels, Trump will travel to the UK before meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki on July 16.
