The EU braces for the second wave of tariffs on US products, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom announced on Tuesday.
The new tariffs will be announced by mid-July.
In the meantime, Malstrom is monitoring global trade flows to ensure that steel and aluminium production bound for the United States is not redirected to Europe, adding to a global supply glut. The EU is examining the possibility of introducing import quotas to shield EU producers from the aftershocks of US tariffs on global trade.
Last Friday Brussels launched legal proceedings against Washington, contesting the introduction of a 25% tariff on steel and 10% tariff on aluminium. The new US tariff regime against Europe came into effect on June 1st.
The EU has seized all trade negotiations with Washington while the tariff regime is in place.
