The coming to power of the “people’s” premier of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan was regarded by many as a real triumph of justice and justice in the country. How quickly did the people learn how wrong they were about the revolutionary government.
The existing Amulsar gold deposit on the territory of the state has been the cause of loss of sleep not only for ordinary people, but also environmentalists.
The fact is that the development of the field leads to the evaporation of cyanide. In particular, the country’s environmentalists have repeatedly stated that the gold mine is rich not only in precious metals, but also in toxic substances of Classes I and II, which are rapidly mobilized due to their toxicity.
Moreover, geologists note, further development could lead to a disruption of Lake Sevan’s balance and even the loss of the entire Ararat valley. The government preferred to ignore the problem.
Last month, residents of the village of Gndevaz, Vayots Dzor region, held a protest action, blocking the road leading to the Amoulsar field, demanding that the mine development work be stopped, as reported by local media.
And so, as the newly-voiced prime minister commented on the action: “Actions against a government that enjoys the confidence of the people are actions against themselves.” What has changed in relation to the revolutionary head of government to the protests. After all, this is the way he came to power just recently.
However, everything is prosaic. It was naive to believe that Pashinyan would be able to withstand the British company Lydian International, which manages the development of the mine under the auspices of the former Armenian president Armen Sargsyan.
