The Macedonian parliament in Skopje voted in favour of ratifying the name change deal with Greece on Wednesday.
Members of the nationalist opposition party VMRO DPMNE boycotted the session, which ended in an overwhelming 69 to 0 votes in favour of the ratification.
The deal will now be submitted for signing by President Gjorgje Ivanov, who already vowed that he will not do so. Some reports speculate that an impeachment vote will be initiated should he persist in his reluctance.
Under the new deal, Macedonia would be renamed the Republic of North Macedonia. After the ratification by the Macedonian parliament, the agreement needs to be confirmed via referendum in September. Following that, it will need to be confirmed by Greek lawmakers to come into effect.
