Merkel reiterates support for JCPOA following Netanyahu talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, on Monday, to discuss the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding Iran.

Speaking to the press following their meeting, Netanyahu insisted that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) needed to investigate Iran further. He said, “We think that it’s important, as Chancellor Merkel has said, that the IAEA investigates Iran based on this new information, a lot of new information that Israel has now provided the IAEA as well. And it’s important to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.”

Merkel, however, continued to insist on Germany’s support for the JCPOA. She said, “We believe that the JCPOA is an opportunity for a certain time, of course, to keep Iran’s activities under control and to prevent a nuclearised Iran.”
