Moldova’s President Igor Dodon has given the assurances there is no danger of NATO bases’ emergence in his country.
“I’ve visited all the military bases in the Republic of Moldova and I haven’t seen any risks or attempts of building other countries’ bases on the territory of our country, and I’m sure there won’t be anything of this kind in the short term – as minimum, there’ll be nothing of the kind while I’m President,” Dodon indicated.
He said it when the anchor asked him about a possibility of placement of NATO bases in his country.
Dodon said it was impossible to pass a decision on placing any military bases without the President’s consent.
“Does NATO have any chances of putting up bases in Moldova in bypass of the President’s consent?” he asked. “Categorically, no. Our Constitution stipulates out neutral status in most clear terms.”
In spite of neutrality, Moldova cooperates with the North-Atlantic pact since 1994 in the format of an individual partnership plan. The incumbent ruling pro-European coalition formed in parliament by the Democratic Party deems it necessary to build up cooperation with the alliance.
