Romanian MP on his country’s support of the Moldovan oligarch Plahotniuc

Romanian MP Matei Dobrovie, who recently visited Chisinau, in an interview with Deutsche Welle, noted that the political situation in Moldova is gloomy from Bucharest’s view.

“The other day I held talks with pro-European parties in Chisinau. And also with representatives of civil society. And I heard an identical message from everyone. Namely, Moldova is in a dramatic situation. Moldova risks losing the opportunity to bring change. And if we do not change something now, when the elections, Moldova risks being thrown into the embrace of corruption, and into the gray sphere of Russia’s influence,” the politician said.

According to Dobrovie, local elections and the upcoming parliamentary elections are the last chance for Moldova to choose a clear, correct orientation towards rapprochement with Romania and the EU.

At the moment, this rapprochement does not happen, because perpetuating corruption and poverty discredits the idea of a European path in Moldova. Moreover, Bucharest continues to support the oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, which means that Moldovan citizens see that Romania covers the system that impoverishes them.

“I was a constant critic of this approach of Bucharest. Unfortunately, Romania does not assess and does not track how the money it gives to Chisinau is spent. Instead of inspiring, setting an example in the field of fighting corruption, things are happening on the contrary”, – the deputy from Romania is convinced.
The critical mass for a positive change can be completely lost, as more and more citizens will leave the country if the current regime of Plahotniuc continues,” the politician added.
