Yerevan Protests

Police has detained 66 people who blocked streets in Armenian capital of yerevan during mass rallies against election of former president Serzh Sargsyan as prime minister, says head of media relations of armenian police Edgar Janoyan

“66 citizens were brought to the police stations on Wednesday,” said Janoyan.

The leader of opposition, MP Nikol Pashinyan called on the police to release his detained supporters. “We call on the police to release our supporters, we welcome their steadfastness and courage,” Pashinyan said during the rally.

He also called for the release of two detainees connected to breaking & entering into the Public Radio building on April 14.

The protests began on April 13th. Opposition accuses Sargsyan of ineffective governance of the country and blames him for economic deterioration. On monday, prtesters tried to break into the parliament building which resulted in clashes as police pushed them back. Opposition announced a revolution on the next day.

Despite protests, the Armenian parliament on Tuesday elected Sagrsian to the post of prime minister. At the same time, earlier amendments to the constitution came into force, according to which Armenia will pass to the parliamentary form of government, and the head of the government will have the broadest powers.

Earlier, Sargsyan called to return the leader of the protest actions of Nikol Pashinyan “from the street to the parliament.”
