A policy investigator and analyst, a political scientist and expert on Eastern Europe, Phil Butler shares his opinion on the ongoing situation in Syria after the alleged chemical weapons attack in the city of Douma.
NF: What do you think about the alleged chemical weapons attack in the Syrian city of Douma?
P.B.: Already this theme is old and boring. Why would Assad, or anybody for that matter, use such horrific weapons on his own people? The only persons who could benefit from such a “strike” are the insurgents and terrorists underneath the White Helmets.
NF: Why the West yet again baldly accuses the Syrian regime of it when we know it’s quite illogically for them (Syrian govt) to do something like this?
P.B.: In order to provide a slim justification once another military incursion is ordered. And, so that the pressure on Russia is maintained.
NF: The US sends its Navy missile destroyer towards Syrian coast, how this can affect the currrent situation?
P.B.: One destroyer does not really affect the situation. This is a show of the American flag only. It is meant to influence those who do not understand the tactical situation.
