Bundestag takes decision to extend military deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan

Members of German Bundestag voted to extend the deployment of the German Armed Forces both in Iraq and Afghanistan in Berlin, Thursday.

Member of Parliament for the CDU/CSU Henning Otte said that using the mandate Germany “strengthen the security of our country, because the terror cannot come again from Afghanistan, [the terror] that carries out attacks in the free world.” According to another member of Parliament from Union ’90/ The Greens, deportation of the asylum seekers from Afghanistan was “cynical”, considering the ethnic tensions in the country.

In total, 359 politicians voted for another seven month deployment in Iraq with tasks of training and consulting Iraqi and Kurdish soldiers in their common fight against the so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL). Another 447 MPs voted for an extension in Afghanistan among the international alliance “Resolute Support.”
