Post-Brexit: EU to decide, reduce the composition of the European Parliament

In June 2018, the European Union will decide to reduce the composition of the European Parliament after Britain withdraws from the bloc. This was announced on Wednesday by the EU representative in Brussels on the eve of the informal summit on Brexit of the 27 countries on February 23.

“At the summit, the heads of states and governments will give green light to reducing the composition of the European Parliament from 751 to 705. And this will pave the way to formally approve this decision in June this year,” he said.

Earlier, the head of the European Council Donald Tusk, in a letter to the leaders of the EU member states, said that although Britain has 73 seats in the European Parliament, he agrees to reduce the number of deputies after Brexit by only 46 people, while preserving another 27 seats “in reserve” for the new EU states.
