Italian PM Gentiloni: No risk of anti-EU government in upcoming elections

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni held a joint press conference in Berlin on Friday.

Gentiloni stated clearly that “Italy will have a stable government. I don’t think there is any risk that it will have a government dominated by populist and anti-European positions.”

Merkel praised the Italian Prime Minister, saying “the work done by Italy on the Mediterranean sea route and on the migrants that come from Libya is outstanding and I must thank Gentiloni especially for this.”

The Italian election will take place on the 4 March, with the most recent polls indicating that there are still millions of undecided voters and with Gentiloni’s Democratic Party steadily decreasing in polls.

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “We have been working close to each other in the last years and right now on the great challenge of migration. The work done by Italy on the Mediterranean sea route and on the migrants that come from Libya is outstanding and I must thank Gentiloni especially for this.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany: “From my side I can say that after a long coalition talk, I must say that there are good chances as it has been said by the SPD, CSU and at the CDU party day. We must of course still wait for the results, but from my party I can say we are optimistic.”

SOT, Paolo Gentiloni, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “Italy will have a government, it will have a stable government. I don’t think there is any risk that it will have a government dominated by populist and anti-European positions.”
