Germany: Nahles ‘unanimously’ nominated as new SPD leader

The SPD’s Bundestag representative Andrea Nahles was unanimously nominated as outgoing SPD leader Martin Schulz’s successor with longest serving party member Olaf Scholz set to assume the role of interim party head confirmed the SPD’s General Secretary Lars Klingbeil announced in Berlin on Tuesday.

Klingbeil said that there were three decisions made today by the SPD board.

“The first decision is that we will come together for an extraordinary party congress in Wiesbaden on 22 April. The second decision is that we unanimously, both within the presidium and the party leadership, propose Andrea Naples as the new party head of SPD. And the third decision is that we asked Olaf Scholz as the longest serving SPD deputy chairman to take the party leadership until this date,” said Klingbeil.
