Syrian Congress under threat: US wants to disrupt the talks

Today was published a letter written on behalf of the US Special Representative to Syria, Michael Ratney, to the Syrian opposition. The author of the publication says that it contains indications of US plans to disrupt the Syrian congress of the National Dialogue in Sochi.

The message begins with the thesis that the US State Department will act in opposition to the proposals of Russian diplomats within the UN. The author of the letter urges his addressee to start acting and to direct efforts to disrupt the congress in Sochi, and also stresses that the United States sees Geneva as the only negotiating platform for Syria.

The letter also contains direct instructions to the armed opposition of Syria: to set conditions unacceptable for the official Damascus, and to ask for what the legitimate government of the country will not do. The author orders to insist on the resignation of Bashar Assad and incline to this opinion other representatives of the opposition, since the United States must nullify all diplomatic merits of Russia in the Syrian direction.

In addition, it’s said on the need to block the conference in Sochi in the framework of the talks in Vienna, the ninth round of which started today. A few days ago, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed his hope that representatives of the Syrian opposition would not demand the resignation of Assad as a condition for participating in the negotiations.
