Greece: Tear gas met with stones as police and anti-austerity protesters clash in Athens

Clashes erupted between protesters and police in front of the Greek Parliament House in Athens on Monday, as demonstrators decried a fresh raft of austerity measures set to be voted on. The bill was approved by 154 lawmakers in the 300-seat Greek parliament.

Protesters hurled stones and pieces of marble against police officers, who deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. More clashes occurred on the Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, where scores of protesters attempted to enter the parliament building.

Last week, PAME (All Workers Military Front) and trade union members went on a 24-hour strike in opposition to the austerity bill. The bundle of laws also seeks to restrict the right to strike.

The austerity measures are demanded by international creditors of Greece in exchange for bailout funds.
