Due to the difficulties in forming the government, Angela Merkel’s support among the German population begins to fall. This is reported by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
As follows from the results of a public opinion poll conducted by YouGov, almost every second German (47%) wants Merkel to leave her post until 2021. Only 36% want to see her as Chancellor for another four years.
Even before the elections in the Bundestag, Merkel’s support was much stronger, the newspaper notes. According to the YouGov survey in early October, 36% of the population favored the departure of Merkel, and 44% – for the preservation of her chancellery until 2021.
On January 7, 2018, negotiations will be held between the CDU / CSU and the Social Democratic Party of Germany on the formation of the government. As a result, either a large coalition or a minority government will be organized under Merkel.
However, if the negotiations end in failure, it is possible to hold regular elections, sums up Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
