ZDF: Trump didn’t take decision to supply arms to Ukraine on his own volition

The head of the White House, Donald Trump, made a decision on the supply of American weapons to Ukraine under pressure from the Ministry of Defense and the National Security Council, ZDF reports. As the correspondent of the German TV channel Ines Trams believes, the US president went about the circumstances, in order not to seem too friendly towards Putin.

“I think that the president himself does not follow any strategy in dealing with Russia or specifically with the supply of arms to Ukraine. Most likely, this decision he took, going on about the circumstances. In the matter of arms deliveries, it seems to be exerted from outside: the Ministry of Defense and the National Security Council.

Prior to this, Donald Trump was always very reserved in matters relating to the supply of arms to Ukraine. This distinguishes him from fellow Republicans. The State Department provides the American public with information about this decision in small portions, one might say timid. In the US, no one sees this as a change in policy.

It seems to me that, on the one hand, Donald Trump is concerned about the reaction of his supporters in the people, in the society, because basically they are critical of the supply of arms to Ukraine or to other countries. He is also concerned about the reaction of Vladimir Putin, because Donald Trump wanted to restart Russian-American relations.

If the weapon is delivered, it is rather against the will of Donald Trump. And yet he does not want to look too friendly to Putin in the eyes of the public. After all, an investigation is underway in the United States to find out whether he and his team did not receive help from the Russians during the 2016 elections”, Ines Trams said.
