President of Moldova called ‘a threat to the country’s security’ opening of NATO office in Chisinau

Moldovan President Igor Dodon believes that the opening of the NATO office in Chisinau, the ceremony of which will be held on Friday, is a threat to the country’s security.

“I express my utmost concern about the opening of the NATO Liaison Office in Chisinau. The haste with which the government of the Republic of Moldova operates has significant risks for Moldova’s national security,” the head of state wrote on Twitter in a Friday.

Earlier, Dodon repeatedly spoke out against the participation of Moldova, in whose constitution neutrality is prescribed, in military blocs. He forbade Moldovan servicemen to participate in NATO’s multinational drills “Quick Trident” in Ukraine and refused to approve the Defense Minister Yevgeny Sturza, who stands for rapprochement with the alliance. According to public opinion polls, the overwhelming majority of Moldovan citizens oppose the country’s entry into NATO.
