Juncker: ‘Breakthrough’ Brexit deal prepares stage for trade talks

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said “we have now made the breakthrough we needed” on Brexit talks, speaking at a press conference in Brussels, Friday, alongside UK Prime Minister Theresa May.

“The commission has just formally decided to recommend to the European Council that sufficient progress has not been made on the strict terms of the divorce,” Juncker said.

For her part, May said: “I very much welcome the prospect of moving ahead to the next phase, to talk about trade and security.”

She went on to describe the deal made regarding the Ireland-Northern Ireland border. “In Northern Ireland we will guarantee there will be no hard border,” she stated.
