Sigmar Gabriel critical of ‘confrontational’ US sanctions

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel told press gathered at the German-Russian Resources Forum in Saint Petersburg that US sanctions on Russia are potentially problematic and could lead to a worsening of diplomatic relations between Washington and Moscow, Wednesday.

Gabriel stated that US policy towards Russia should not be carried out in a manner which would ‘lead to further confrontation’, saying that lifting German sanctions on Russia was part of government policy.

He went on to say that Germany was keen to work with Russia on diplomatic solutions in Ukraine, such as a ceasefire, and cooperating with Moscow in order to expand economic opportunities and political partnerships despite ‘some differences’.
