Belgium: Puigdemont demands release of arrested Catalan leaders

Former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont demanded the release of the arrested Catalan leaders and an “end of political repression,” during a statement delivered in Brussels, Thursday.

Referring to himself as a “legitimate” president he called for the release “of the councilors and the vice president.” He stressed that the Spanish state’s “fury” is “threatening everything” and warned Catalans that there will be a “long and fierce repression.”

He stated that Catalans should stand up against it “without violence, in peace and with respect for all opinions and people.”

A European arrest warrant has also been issued against Puigdemont.
