Farage lashes EU for treating Corbyn as a ‘monarch’ but refusing to break Brexit deadlock

Nigel Farage has blasted the EU for treating Jeremy Corbyn like a “monarch” but refusing to break Brexit deadlock because of “political imperative”.

Mr Corbyn was in Brussels to discuss the future of socialism in the EU but used the opportunity to discuss Brexit negotiations with the EU’s Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

Ahead of his speech, EU Socialist leader Gianni Pittella introduced Jeremy Corbyn as the upcoming “Prime Minister of the United Kingdom”.

The shock claim by Mr Pittella infuriated Nigel Farage, who said the EU is now “intervening in British politics” and treating Jeremy Corbyn as if he was “some sort of rockstar”.

Speaking on Sky News, Mr Farage said: “They told us we couldn’t negotiate with the EU 27, and in turn they shouldn’t be negotiating with the SNP or Jeremy Corbyn but they are.”

But Sky News’ Adam Boulton said: “But he just came here as leader of a socialist party, didn’t he?”

Mr Farage hit back and said: “No, no, no. He was treated as if he was a monarch.

“They would love to sow division in British politics.

“Frankly, they would love Jeremy Corbyn to be Prime Minister because Labour’s position now is that they will accept any deal.”

During Mr Corbyn’s visit to Brussels, he met with Mr Barnier and European Parliament president Antonio Tajani to discuss his attitudes towards Brexit negotiations.

Mr Farage savaged the EU and said the “political imperative” in Brussels is that no country can leave without being punished.

He said: “What I am certain of is that here in Brussels, they don’t want a deal. They want to string it out for as long as possible.”

But Farage said the only hope of getting a deal and breaking the Brexit “deadlock” is with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He said: “She’s the one person who could break the deadlock.”
