Bulgarian president: International community must address the root causes of conflicts and migration

To address the root causes of protracted military conflicts, the United Nations needs an integrated approach that combines preventive diplomacy, mediation and peacebuilding. Only in this way we can restore governance and stabilize political, economic and social conditions in countries affected by the crisis. President Rumen Radev announced this today in his first speech at the UN General Assembly in New York. The head of state heads the Bulgarian delegation to participate in the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly “Towards a peaceful and dignified residing for all on a sustainable planet”.

In his speech at the summit forum, President Radev stressed that the ongoing conflicts in many regions of the world continue to undermine international peace, security and human rights.

“Violence destroys the local economy, provokes large-scale movements of refugees and migrants and leads to the spread of diseases, hunger and immense human suffering,” the head of state said.

“International migration is a global phenomenon, and only through joint efforts, such as the Global Compact on Migration, can we ensure a balanced approach that includes respect for human rights and international humanitarian law, as well as effective border control and readmission,” Mr Radev said.

The President categorically stated that states have the rights and obligations to protect their borders as an essential element of their national security. “Strong border control is crucial, especially to prevent illegal migration and eradicate trafficking in human beings,” the head of state added.

The Head of State stressed that the conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, North Africa and Afghanistan are serious threats to international peace and security. Rumen Radev was categorical in that disarmament, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and arms control are one of the pillars of international security. Bulgaria reiterates its full support for the Joint Iranian Nuclear Action Plan, adopted in 2015 as a key to regional and global security, the President stressed.

In his statement, Mr Radev expressed the position of the country, which strongly condemns the repeated nuclear attempts and the launching of missiles from the DPRK, which will lead to the subsequent escalation of tensions in the region and the undermining of international peace and security. The head of state called for a peaceful, diplomatic and political solution to the problem.
